Building Trades of Alberta is a proud co-owner of Better SuperVision and plays an active role in the operation of the program. Many programs are offered in building trades union training facilities throughout Alberta.

Construction Labour Relations - An Alberta Association
Construction Labour Relations – An Alberta Association (CLR-A) is a proud co-owner of Better SuperVision and plays an active role in the administration of the program.
Of particular interest to supervisors in the construction industry is the training offered by CLR-A on the Canadian Model Alcohol and Drug Policy which is:
- Supervisors’ workshop (1/2 day) which is targeted to provide front line supervisors with an in-depth understanding on all aspects of the Canadian Model Policy.
- Train-The-Trainer (one day) targeted for people who deliver training on the Canadian Model Alcohol & Drug Policy or who have in-depth administrative responsibilities for the Policy.

Blue Seal Program
The Achievement in Business Competencies Program, also known as the Blue Seal Program, was established by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board to encourage and recognize the study of business by persons certified in a designated trade or occupation.
All the classroom time completed by Learners in the Better SuperVision and Leadership For Safety Excellence programs are credited by AAIT towards obtaining the Blue Seal as follows:
Better SuperVision – 54 hours
Leadership For Safety Excellence – 16 hours

Construction Owners Association of Alberta
The Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA) is dedicated to developing and promoting a wide range of Best Practices in the industrial sector of our industry designed to help improve construction safety and work performance. Amongst those Best Practices are a number of initiatives relative to improving and promoting formalized supervisory training and development. Better SuperVision has always made a point of incorporating COAA Best Practices into our training programs so that our graduates are up to speed on progressive supervisory practices important to our industry.
In 2005 Better SuperVision was the proud recipient of the COAA Best Practices Workforce Development Leadership Award. For further information on COAA and their Best Practices please visit their website.
Industrial Construction Crew Supervisor -
Designated Occupation
Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) has created the opportunity for people to apply for the certificate of Designated Occupation for the position of Industrial Construction Crew Supervisor (ICCS). This certificate can be obtained upon application to AIT and demonstrating:
- Completion of supervisory training that is approved by AIT and is industry based (example – Better SuperVision) plus the Leadership For Safety Excellence program (offered by the Alberta Construction Safety Association) plus
- Proof of having worked one thousand hours as an industrial construction crew supervisor within a two year period no more than five years prior to date of application plus
- Successful completion of an exam administered by AIT plus
- Payment of a $150 fee to AIT for processing the application.
Contractors, unions, and industry organizations can also submit their own supervisory training programs to AIT for recognition as industry recognized supervisory training. If approved then people who have completed the training will not have to complete additional classroom training.

It is important to note that there is no “legal” requirement to hold this certificate in order to perform the work of Industrial Construction Crew Supervisor. Obtaining and holding this certificate is purely voluntary.
Gold Seal Accreditation
The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) Gold Seal is a national certification program for construction Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators, and Owners’ Project Managers.
Better SuperVision learning is accredited by Gold Seal for the following “Special Industry Course (SIC)” credits towards the CCA Gold Seal Certificate:
- Better SuperVision (5 modules) - 9 SIC’s
- Leaders Building Leaders – 4 SIC’s

Leadership For Safety Excellence
Part of Better SuperVision training includes completing the two day classroom portion of Leadership For Safety Excellence (LSE). This program is specifically designed for people in supervisory positions and is available through the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Upon completion of the LSE program Better SuperVision candidates receive an additional seal of completion on their BSV certificates.

Construction Sector Council (CSC)
Construction Sector Council, based in Ottawa, delivers a wide range of services designed to improve the human resource capability and capacity of the entire construction industry across Canada. In 2007 and 2008 Construction Sector Council conducted in-depth research to define the skills required of a front line supervisor in construction.
